Buy Me a Coffee: A Short Story
Ella Harper: A successful, self-assured woman in her late 20s, with a sharp mind and a keen sense for business.
Lucas Walker: A charming, easygoing man in his early 30s who has a knack for starting conversations, especially with strangers.
Maxine: Ella’s best friend and business partner, the grounded and practical voice of reason.
Ella Harper had always been a woman who knew what she wanted. As the founder of a fast-growing marketing firm, she was used to making decisions quickly and with authority. Her days were filled with deadlines, meetings, and strategy sessions, leaving little room for idle moments. But today, there was a strange sense of anticipation hanging in the air.
It was the middle of the afternoon, and Ella found herself walking into her favorite coffee shop, Bean & Brew, the cozy little café nestled between two towering skyscrapers. As she approached the counter, the familiar warmth of the coffee shop’s aroma embraced her, momentarily easing the tension from her shoulders. She wasn’t here for a break—she was here for a meeting.
"Hi, Ella! Your usual?" the barista asked, flashing her a smile.
"Yes, please," Ella replied, her eyes scanning the room. Her mind was already thinking about the proposal she was set to pitch to a potential client. A simple coffee wouldn’t distract her, not today.
As she waited for her drink, she noticed a man sitting at the corner of the café. He was leaning back in his chair, casually scrolling through his phone, a cup of coffee in front of him. There was something about him—his relaxed posture, the easy confidence in his demeanor—that caught her attention. But what truly stood out was his smile. It was warm, approachable, and strangely inviting.
She shook off the thought. She was here for work, not to flirt.
But as she took her coffee from the counter and turned to find a seat, their eyes met. The man smiled a genuine, effortless smile that made Ella’s heart flutter for a moment. It was like he knew exactly what she was thinking—this wasn’t a chance encounter; it was an invitation.
"Mind if I join you?" he asked, his voice smooth and confident, but not overbearing.
Ella hesitated. She wasn’t used to strangers approaching her in such a direct manner. But there was something about him that made her curious. Maybe it was his calm demeanor or the ease with which he seemed to navigate the world around him.
"Sure," she said, setting her coffee down and gesturing to the empty chair across from her.
"Thanks," he replied, settling into the chair with a relaxed ease. "I'm Lucas, by the way."
"Ella," she said, offering a polite smile.
"Nice to meet you, Ella." He paused, as if assessing her, and then asked, "So, what brings you to Bean & Brew today?"
Ella was caught off guard by the question. Most people wouldn’t dare ask about her professional life so openly, but Lucas didn’t seem to be interested in the typical small talk.
"I'm here for a meeting," she said, her voice steady. "I'm pitching a proposal to a potential client later today."
"Ah, the high-pressure life of a businesswoman," Lucas said with a chuckle. "Sounds intense."
"It can be," Ella agreed, her fingers tapping lightly against the rim of her cup. "But it's also rewarding. There's something satisfying about watching a business grow, you know?"
"I get that. I've always admired people who can turn ideas into reality," he said, his eyes glinting with genuine interest.
For the next few minutes, they exchanged casual conversation, speaking about everything from business to travel, to the quirky people they had met in their lives. There was an ease to their conversation, an unspoken connection that Ella couldn’t quite explain. Lucas was charming without trying too hard, and his laugh was infectious. She found herself laughing along, her usual guarded demeanor slipping away.
It was then that Lucas said something that caught her off guard.
"You know, I like the way you think. You're sharp and confident. But I think you're missing something."
Ella raised an eyebrow. "What's that?"
"A coffee date," he said with a wink.
Ella blinked, unsure if she had heard him correctly. "A coffee date?" she asked, laughing nervously.
"Yeah," Lucas replied, leaning forward slightly, his eyes never leaving hers. "You’ve got this business stuff down, but I think you could use a little more fun in your life. And what's more fun than a spontaneous coffee date?"
Ella smiled, appreciating his boldness. "You’re a smooth talker, I’ll give you that."
"I don’t need to talk too much," Lucas said, his voice softening. "Sometimes, all it takes is the right moment."
Ella was silent for a moment, considering his words. There was something about the way he spoke, the way he carried himself, that made her feel both relaxed and intrigued. It had been so long since she’d taken time for anything other than her work. Maybe Lucas had a point.
Before she could respond, her phone buzzed. The text was from Maxine, her business partner.
Maxine: Where are you? You’re going to be late for the meeting!
Ella’s heart skipped a beat. She had lost track of time. She quickly stood up, grabbing her coffee. "I’m sorry, I have to go. I’ve got a meeting I can’t be late for."
Lucas stood as well, flashing her that warm smile again. "No problem. Maybe we’ll meet again sometime?"
Ella smiled back, a small spark of curiosity igniting in her chest. "Maybe. Take care, Lucas."
She walked out of the café, her mind buzzing with the unexpected encounter. As she headed toward her meeting, she couldn’t help but replay the conversation in her head. There was something magnetic about Lucas. And the idea of a spontaneous coffee date sounded... tempting.
Days passed, and Ella found herself thinking about Lucas more than she cared to admit. She had a lot on her plate, but his words lingered in her mind. He had a way of cutting through her usual armor, making her feel like she was more than just the woman who ran a successful business.
One evening, after a long day of back-to-back meetings, Ella sat down at her desk, staring at the emails piling up. Just as she was about to dive into another project, her phone buzzed with a new message.
It was from Lucas.
Lucas: Hey, Ella. Buy me a coffee?
Ella stared at the message for a moment, a smile tugging at her lips. It was playful and simple, yet something was endearing about it. It wasn’t just about the coffee—it was about connecting, about breaking away from the usual routine.
With a quick tap, she replied.
Ella: How about tomorrow morning?
Lucas: Perfect. I’ll be waiting.
The next morning, Ella found herself back at Bean & Brew, the familiar scent of roasted coffee beans greeting her as soon as she walked in. This time, she was meeting Lucas not out of happenstance, but with intention. She spotted him immediately, sitting at the same corner table, his eyes already on her.
"Good morning," she said as she approached.
"Morning, Ella," Lucas said with that same easy smile. "Coffee's on me today. It's only fair, right?"
Ella chuckled, feeling a rush of warmth. "Fair enough."
They spent the next hour talking, not about business, not about life plans, but about the little things—favorite books, obscure hobbies, travel destinations. For the first time in a long time, Ella felt like she was just... living.
As they parted ways, Ella felt lighter, happier, and more balanced. It wasn’t just the coffee that had made the difference—it was the connection, the moment of human interaction that had broken through her usual work-focused mindset.
Maybe, just maybe, Ella thought, life wasn’t all about hustle and ambition. Sometimes, it was about pausing, taking a breath, and saying, "Buy me a coffee."
